What is Fannin County GA known for? ›

Once an agricultural county, Fannin is now noted both for development of mountain land and for tourism. Mercier Orchard is a profitable business as well as a tourist attraction. Within the total land area of 386 square miles lie large portions of the Chattahoochee National Forest and the Cohutta Wilderness Area.

James Fannin led the rebels massacred at Goliad in 1836. His defeat inspired the victory that secured Texas independence. Fannin moved to Texas in 1834 from Georgia. When the Texas Revolution erupted in 1835, his ambition put him at the center of the action.

The county was originally to be named Independence, but during the course of opening debates over the bill, the name was changed to Fannin, in honor of James Walker Fannin, Jr., a martyred hero of the Texas Revolution.
